portraits of madness

sitting in my kitchen awake again at 4:30 in the morning. taking a break from my persona drawing to go through email. i really dig the re-title mailing list. i have learned about so many interesting contemporary artists through it, as well as references to some past artists unfamiliar to me. in one of this week's posts, i encountered some horrifying and fascinating portraits by gavin nolan. these are done in oil, if you can believe that, and they're not even the scariest ones i found online.

such terrifying, grotesque portrayals of humanity. not easy to look at, but very relevant. seems like he is coming out of the lineage of joe coleman, ivan albright, brueghel, bosch... but he focuses in on the individual, the face. they are uncomfortably revealing. see more here.

because what you do defines who you are

9:57 am

today, my friends, i am interested in productivity. and to keep me on track, undistracted by youtube videos of sarah silverman and dave chappelle, i am going to blog everything that i do.

first order of the day: make a spice cake, c/o yellow rose recipes. here i go.

ok, spice cake is baked and cooling. icing is ready to ice. am going to fill the newly painted bookcase with books. i am not going to watch my silverman dvds. pictures of productivity to come!

sadly, no room for my hitchcock pop-up book or the ginormous collection of tori amos comics that i paid upwards of $100 for and could only get through about a quarter of it. but look! lovely film books!

also unloaded were our comic books, kiddie books and apocalyptic culture books. i know, maybe not the best idea to put a doomsday reader next to go, dog. go!, but it was either that, my old serial killer books or erotic classics such as the sexual life of catherine m. and the complete kama sutra.

now a break for some spice cake and assisting luca with his back pain, then more productivity!

mmm, spice cake:

now onto some other matters. 1) calling pier1 to find out of the cushions i like are the right size. 2) varnishing my girl on a bridge painting and call rachel to set up a time to get it framed. 3) reply to rich about the bookcase extension and keyboard stand.

energy is low. decided on some pillows for the bayish window, from sarah smile creations. aren't they adorable?

also varnished said painting and contacted rich. i think i'll watch a movie on my "to watch" list now.

made it halfway through platform, then had to go to the co-op for groceries. now i am giving up on productivity for the day. i was hoping i would feel a bit more accomplished. oh well. time to watch ms. sarah.

ulysses at lankenau (for lenya)

"the voices blend and fuse in clouded silence: silence that is the infinite of space: and swiftly, silently the soul is wafted over regions of cycles of generations that have lived. a region where grey twilight ever descends, never falls on wide sagegreen pasturefields, shedding her dusk, scattering a perennial dew of stars."
